A recent visit south confirmed this when I sought refuge from the heat in a park I once played in but which is now a landscape of natural meadows, a community vegetable garden, rose garden, water features and an elegant restaurant and art gallery.
Charles Leadbeater wrote “Beaches are a model civic space: tolerant, playful, self-regulating.” I think parks also qualify – shared by all manner of us, absorbing the claims staked by each group or individual – to a stretch of grass, a bench in the shade, a viewpoint.
