I recently completed a 3-week posting as a locum gardener (or waterer, to be more accurate). The garden under my charge was a visual wonder and the camera was seldom put down for long. While setting up a wide-angle view, my eye picked up some botanical ‘debris’ towards the bottom of the frame. I moved it out of the way and took the shots but on turning back to look at it, I was taken by the large and sculptural dried leaves – which I now know to be from a Magnolia.
A few days later, and maybe as a hommage to a group of artists I’ve long admired: Nils Udo, Chris Drury, Richard Long, Andy Goldsworthy, I ended up creating this piece ‘Furl’ and have the seeds (sorry!) of a poem…….
The year begins to fold its brittle pennants – furling time
