I take an instinctively reductionist approach to photographing people – seeking to pin down visual signatures. It can be the tilt of the head, a widening of the eyes, a certain crease at the jawline, an unguarded expression – but it is immediately identifiable and is the subject’s alone.

My precious inherited Chambers English Dictionary gives a definition of the word ‘face’ – an index of the mind.

But zooming in close – as I often do – can be discomfiting and there comes a time when conveying a wider view – of relationships between people or between person and place tells the story.
